August 17, 2014: His new sci-fi movie, “The Giver,” co-starring Meryl Streep and with an eerie role for Taylor Swift, just hit theaters this weekend. But didja know Jeff Bridges also plays guitar? Apparently so, and what’s more, Bridges and his country-rock band, The Abiders, kick off a tour this Friday, August 22, at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Indiana.
Bridges is actually a life-long guitarist. His passion for music has been evidenced before, particularly on two albums, the second of which, the 2011 release Jeff Bridges, actually hit Number 25 on the Billboard charts. Bridges and band appeared on a 2011 Austin City Limits episode where the actor lead his band through a six-song set on guitar and vocals. He also appeared on Speaking Clock, a 2011 T-Bone Burnett-produced album, and in a New York City concert for the album which found Bridges on stage with Burnett, Elvis Costello, Elton John, and Leon Russell.
On Bridges’ upcoming 11-city Midwest and East Coast Abiders tour, he sings, and plays guitar and keyboards. The Oscar-winning actor’s daughter, singer-songwriter Jessie Bridges, will be the opening act on several of the dates.
Could be a fun diversion to see the shaggy-haired actor playing real-life musician, but whatever you do, don’t argue with him about the Eagles. Neither Bunny Lebowski or Jackie Treehorn are expected to make appearances, but ya never know what kinda shenanigans might take place backstage after a few white russians.
