What's better than a music fest where you can also learn worm composting and buy postage stamps all in the same location? San Francisco's Golden Gate Park heats up this weekend with Outside Lands, August 8 through 10. Get there if ya can.
Now this is an eclectic fest, but what else would you expect from San Francisco? Combining music, food, wine, beer, and art -- not to mention social responsibility and eco-recruitery (is that even a word?) -- Outside Lands looks like a place to indulge, do something good for planet Earth, and then get all hyped up on whatever your favorite music might be. Haight-Ashbury is right down the street too. Just sayin'.
We're not sure if doing something good for Planet Earth is mandatory, but face it: You're using the place up just as fast as the rest of us, so why not get your butt off yer filthy festival blanket and do something to help out a little bit, huh? There is a beach clean-up Saturday morning, and you're invited to ride your bicycle to the fest and check it in with the "Bike Valet." Neither of those look too complicated.
And the artist line-up is as eclectic as the rest of the festival too. Outside Lands crosses musical genres, with headliners such as Kanye West one night, and Killers another, on six stages cranking from noon to 10 p.m. As for guitar players, Tom Petty headlines Saturday night, taking the stage right after Death Cab for Cutie. The Tedeschi Trucks Band, The Flaming Lips, the John Butler Trio, and Ray Lamontagne are also among the dozens of artists performing.
And don't forget to pick up your new issue Janis Joplin postage stamps from the USPS booth, right after you participate in one or two of the twice-daily worm composting workshops.
