Scott’s collaborations with Doug Kauer see Gibson and Gretsch influences collide with considerable style. His first Kauer – a gold Firebird-style Banshee model with pinstripes – is currently in the repair shop, but we get to grips with Excalibur, the first custom instrument that Holiday was heavily involved in spec’ing out.

“This is really the first guitar where I make appointments and decide what things I want to have on the guitar and styles and pickups and stuff like that,” Scott reveals. “I wanted to get into Filter’Tron pickups – I’d played some and thought they were right up my alley. I love this guitar so much. I got it when we were making [2014 album] Great Western Valkyrie, and I used it for almost the entire record. It came to the studio and right out of the box, those TV Jones Filter’Trons became my best friends! I think there’s a Magna’Tron in the middle and the other two are a Power’Tron Plus at the bridge and a Power’Tron in the neck.

“The binding, the colour, the Bigsby, how we wired that middle pickup, the Steinberger tuners that I had put on my Gibson – these were all appointments that I was really specific about and really into. Great, great guitar. Love that instrument. It’s still one of my favourites that I’ve done with Doug.”
