“Expect many notes.” Those were the friendly words of caution from Tom Quayle at the onset of the Guitar.com Masterclass, held on 7 April in Singapore. He wasn’t kidding.

Together with Martin Miller, his partner for the evening, Quayle helmed an insightful session that swerved through playing techniques, improvisational tricks and of course plenty of duet arrangements. Chick Corea’s Spain, Stevie Wonder’s Isn’t She Lovely and Pat Metheny’s Travels were just a few of the tunes the two virtuosos breezed through on their signature Ibanez guitars – Quayle on his TQM1 and Miller on his MM1.

And when it came to technique, Miller and Quayle had lots to demonstrate. The pair discussed the importance of chord tones over guitar scales when improvising. There is no ‘right scale’ to play in any particular key, Miller insisted. Rather, treating each chord in the progression as its own key makes for a more musically interesting and coherent solo or lead line.

Furthermore Quayle’s explanation of his legato and hybrid picking style wasn’t just hugely informative, but also gave everyone in attendance a basic primer on hybrid fusion guitar.

Our thanks to Tom and Martin for keeping the 200-strong audience entertained and informed, and needless to say we’re all excited to see what the next Guitar.com Masterclass will bring – stay tuned…
