Eight new pedals and effects units: August 2019

Our favourite new stompbox announcements, releases and rumours of the past month.

Every month, we compile a few lists of gear that’s fresh out of the oven. Here’s one devoted to new guitar pedals.

8Crazy Tube Circuits Speed Demon

Crazy Tubes Circuits Gus G Speed Demon Overdrive

CTC’s latest creation, Speed Demon, is a collaboration with heavy metal guitarist, Gus G. It’s an overdrive unit that’s tuned for Gus’ shattering riffs and searing leads. CTC has also included a saturation circuit in the pedal which compresses certain frequencies to help your axe cut right through the mix.

7Walrus Audio Kangra

This intriguing two-in-one filter fuzz pedal is a collaboration between Walrus Audio and Saturday Night Live guitarist, Jared Scharff. On one hand, it arms you with spatty octave fuzz, and on the other, a trippy filter that can be used for sweeps or envelope filter sounds. The latter can run independently or with the fuzz leading into it.

6Gamechanger Audio Plasma Coil

Yet another collab effort on this list, the Plasma Coil was developed by Gamechanger Audio and Jack White’s Third Man Records. If the specs seem familiar, that’s because it uses the same High Voltage Distortion technology seen in Gamechanger’s Plasma Plus pedal. It does however, add multiple octave-style circuits to the distortion unit.

5Jim Dunlop Authentic Hendrix ’69 Psych Series Fuzz Face Distortion

One of the most exciting releases at Summer NAMM 2019, this Fuzz Face pedal combines two styles of fuzz: abrasive silicon-based crunch and velvety germanium-based saturation. Both were used by Hendrix throughout his career. Look out for this pedal when it’s officially available in September this year.

4Dophix Michelangelo

Dophix’s Michelangelo is an OD/boost stomper that can take you from a transparent boost to edge-of-breakup distortion. It comes with JFET transistors, which provide a warm, tube-like response.

3Boss SY-1

Boss’ SY-1, released at Summer NAMM 2019, is perfect for those of you looking to turn your axe into a synth. With 11 synth types with 11 variations each, this little blue box arms you with a crateful of sounds – 121, if you do the quick math. These range from throwback analog sounds to leads to organs to basses and more.

2Greer Amps Gorilla Warfare MKII

The Gorilla Warfare MKII is Greer Amps’ take on the Rat distortion circuit. It’s powered by the popular LM308 chip – like the first version – and delivers some wildly aggressive drive tones. With this pedal, Greer Amps has turned the filter knob into a tone control that can dial in more treble.

1Fender Smolder Acoustic Overdrive

Looking to heat up your acoustic tone? One of Fender’s latest pedal offerings, the Smolder Acoustic Overdrive, is designed add drive to your acoustic sound without ruining musicality. It features a nifty Pickup Compensation control that smooths out highs, softening the attack of piezo pickups.
