Every month, we’ll compile a few lists of gear that’s fresh out of the oven. Here’s one devoted to pedals.
Alexander Pedals Defender Stargate Drive
Overdrive, distortion and fuzz are the heart of this video game-inspired stompbox. But that’s just the basics. The Defender lets you layer on either an octave shift, modulated delay or low-pass filter to all three gain effects.
Mooer Audio Groove Loop
This bandmate-in-a-box is a great practicing tool: It’s a drum machine and looper that, if used simultaneously, will automatically synchronize your loop with the 16 onboard beat patterns.
Stacks FX Thsee Anomaly
The boutique pedal maker’s first delay unit harnesses the power of light—via a photo-coupler cell, an LED and an LFO section—to conjure anything from modulated repeats to endless oscillations.
EarthQuaker Devices Pyramids
This monster of a stereo flanger has eight modes that let you dial in sounds from the regular ‘jet plane whoosh’ to the wackiest tones from your imagination.
Deep Space Devices Golem
With knobs labeled “Rage,” “Quake” and “Mass,” it’s no surprise that this overdrive isn’t content with playing nice. It’s a silicone- and germanium-based unit that’s geared towards harsher noises, from buzzsaw sounds to bassy textures.
Mythos Pedals Mjolnir
Mythos teams up with Wildwood Guitars to release this revamped version of the popular Mjonir overdrive. It’s still a Klon Centaur clone, though, except it now promises less noise and is housed in a larger enclosure.
ZVEX’s newest pedal, a psychedelic four-stage phaser/vibrato, is a versatile, nuanced unit that can yield vintage swirls, slow rotovibe tones and wide modulated sweeps.
Benson Amps Preamp
The boutique company’s Chimera tube amp is the inspiration behind the Preamp, which uses FET transistors to create ‘amp-like’ boost, OD, fuzz and EQ features.
SoundBrut DRVA MKII
Twenty-five decibels of colored MOSFET boost, in a dozen voices, followed by a saturated overdrive stage make the DRVA MKII a Swiss Army knife of psych rock tones.
Dr No Moon Canyon
This three-stage ambient machine chains an overdrive into a reverb into a delay, with an effects loop before the time-based effects.
Electro-Harmonix Oceans 11
Billed as its best reverb pedal yet, EHX’s Oceans 11 packs 11 reverb types into a slim stompbox. There are your usual hall, spring and plate reverbs alongside weirder modes that can elicit sitar sounds and octave-up washes from your instrument.
Morley Custom Shop Mini Steve Vai Bad Horsie 2 Contour Wah
Steve Vai himself illustrated the graffiti-esque artwork that emblazons the hand-built Morley Custom Shop Mini Wah. Besides that, the pedal is essentially identical to the regular model—but good looks are always worth a few extra points, right?
