Sporting a brand-new enclosure that straddles the line between Beetronics’ traditional oversized pedals and miniature stompboxs, the Fatbee overdrive is part of the boutique company’s new Babee range, whose units are designed to sit snugly on your ’board without upsetting the real estate.

The Fatbee is a JFET overdrive and, with the Honey (gain) dial held back at about 10 o’clock, it’s capable of a sweet low-gain overdrive with just enough bite to stop humbuckers getting mushy. Push it towards maximum gain, however, and it gets warm and sticky, and the Flavor (tone) knob responds almost like an amp’s presence control, ranging from extra spiky at the top of its range to smooth near the bottom. Add in Beetronics typically eccentric design and top-mounted controls, and you have yourself a killer pedal with a sting in its tail.
