The upcoming Engineering Design Show will feature an all-metal “smash-proof” guitar, designed and built by engineering firm Sandvik.

Sandvik will delve into the unique design and manufacturing challenges of the project in its presentation “Designing the Unbreakable Guitar”, taking place on Wednesday 16 October. The guitar itself will be on display, with Sandvik staff members on hand to delve into the nature of the materials used.

In a first for the Engineering Design Show, attendees will also be treated to a live musical performance to demonstrate that the guitar does actually function as an instrument, as well as an indestructible metal bludgeon designed to take chunks out of stage equipment.

The project was completed earlier this year, billed as a “challenge” to guitarist Yngvie Malmsteen – known for destroying guitars at the end of shows. The guitar was designed in collaboration with Drewman Guitars’ Andy Holt, and used a number of innovative construction methods not seen before in the world of musical instruments. It’s no surprise that Sandvik is the only manufacturer to attempt something like this – not many guitar builders, big or small, have the means to 3D-print with titanium.
