Electro-Harmonix has announced an affordable, 15-watt pedal-sized amplifier, entitled the Howitzer.

The amplifier has a preamp and power amp stage, and can drive cabinets between 8 and 16 ohms. An effects loop allows you to place additional effects in between the preamp and power amp stages of the amp, meaning delays and reverbs don’t have to be compressed by the amp’s distortion, if you’re using it.

The amp’s gain can vary from a completely clean sound to fairly heavy overdrive. Additional controls on it include a three-band EQ, as well as a master volume and bright/normal toggle switch.

EHX founder Mike Matthews said of the launch: “Dig it! The sandwich-sized 15-watt Howitzer is perfect as part of a compact guitar rig or backup. But the thing I dig the most, is the tone that emanates from the Howitzer. It’s super versatile and—depending on what kind of setup you’re running—fits into any style that’s your bag!”

Hear it in action with EHX’s demo below.

While the unit is very much pedal-sized, measuring in at around 10 by 12 cm, it requires a little more than standard pedal power – instead, the Howitzer runs off a supplied 24V centre-positive supply.

Given its size and affordability (listing for only $127.90), it could make a brilliant backup amp to keep in a gigbag, or you could centre your main rig around it to make your setup extra-portable.
