Electro-Harmonix has launched its latest pedal, an affordable fuzz pedal entitled the Ripped Speaker.

The pedals name is in reference to an early technique of achieving guitar distortion, which would involve literally ripping or cutting the cone of your guitar’s speaker. The sounds it achieves take after this early world of fuzz and distortion, however, EHX notes that it’s also capable of achieving much more modern sounds at higher volume and fuzz levels.

The pedal features four controls – volume, tone, fuzz and rip. Volume sets the pedals output level, while the tone knob offers an active tilt EQ. This means when it’s turned anti-clockwise, bass frequencies are boosted and the treble is cut. Turning it clockwise boosts the treble frequencies and cuts the bass. Fuzz, at lower settings, creating lo-fi, old school sounds reminiscent of the pedal’s namesake, while at higher settings, the fuzz sound enters into more saturated, wall-of-fuzz territory.

The rip knob is effectively a bias control, which sets the amount of clipping and allows for a gated“dying battery” effect at lower levels, or smoother sustain at higher levels.

You can hear it in action below.

The pedal lists for $99. Find out more ehx.com. For more gear news, click here.
