Gibson’s new 60th Anniversary SG Custom and SG Standard shoot for vintage accuracy

Gibson has released a pair of SGs to celebrate 60 years of the iconic electric guitar model: the 60th Anniversary SG Custom and SG Standard.

Both guitars are designed to be as period-correct as possible. To create the instruments, Gibson first 3D-scanned a pair of original ‘61 models and started replicating their features.

The mahogany-built guitars have thin neck profiles, no-tube truss rods and sideways vibrola systems as callbacks to the era. They also have medium-jumbo frets, nylon nuts and an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge.

The guitars are equipped with Custombucker humbuckers; the Custom has three, while the Standard has two. These route to two sets of volume and tone controls with 500k CTS pots and Black Beauty capacitors.

Tuning machines on the Custom are Grover Kidneys, while the Standard has reissued Kluson Double Rings.

The 60th Anniversary guitars are offered in their own distinct colours. The Custom comes in Polaris White with gold hardware, while the Standard comes in Cherry Red with aged nickel hardware.

The Gibson 60th Anniversary SG Custom and SG Standard are available for $6,699 and $4,999 each. Both come with their own reissued hardcase.

In another recent Gibson launch, the brand has announced the first models out of the Murphy Lab. They include 1954, ’56 and ’57 Goldtops, a ’57 Junior, Special and Les Paul Custom along with the expected 1958, ’59 and ’60 Burst replicas, among many others.
