NAMM 2019: Martin announces Modern Deluxe Series

The range boasts custom features, modern technology and neat vintage appointments.

Martin Modern Deluxe OM-28

Martin has kicked off its 2019 plans with the Modern Deluxe Series. The line is a fresh take on the brand’s Vintage Series, packing a suite of new features alongside cutting-edge luthiery. These will be offered in four classic Martin models: the D-18, D-28, 000-28 and OM-28.

Each guitar features a Sitka spruce Vintage Tone System (VTS) top, VTS Adirondack spruce braces, and a natural protein glue construction. According to Martin, these combine to produce “the rich, fully aged Martin tone that has inspired generations”.

Vintage-inspired components are only one half of the story. The Modern Deluxe models also boast features designed to enhance tone and playability, such as a redesigned neck shape that has an ultra-low profile and a slightly asymmetrical contour – these contribute to greater comfort when playing.

Other contemporary touches include a two-way titanium truss rod – it’s 64 per cent lighter than its traditional counterpart – and a composite carbon fibre bridge plate. The former allows the neck to be easily adjusted, while the latter amplifies the guitar’s volume without the need for a bigger body.

In the aesthetics department, the Modern Deluxe models feature stunning tonewood and binding selections. The 28-style guitars have an alluring combination of East Indian rosewood back and sides with a flamed maple binding. The 18-style models, on the other hand, use genuine mahogany backs and sides that stand in contrast to their East Indian rosewood bindings.

Rounding up the guitars’ cosmetics are shiny gold frets, gold open-gear tuners and a classy pearl script logo for a headstock inlay.
