The regular six-string is a nod to Gilmour’s main recording and writing acoustic for over forty years. Both the six- and 12-string models are the first D-35s to feature a neck, back and sides all made of sinker mahogany, chosen at Gilmour’s request for its warm sound and distinctive grain. The six-string features an Adirondack spruce top, treaded with Martin’s proprietary ‘Vintage Tone System” torrefaction process, while the 12-string features a Carpathian spruce top.
Both models are finished in a vintage gloss, and feature a special David Gilmour headstamp at the back of the headstock – a first for a martin signature model – as well as a label hand-signed by Gilmour himself. Both guitars are limited to only 250 pieces, listing for $5,499.
Fred Greene, Martin’s vice president of product development, said of the partnership: “I was so excited when Westside, our U.K. distributor, contacted us about the opportunity to build a signature model for David. He is one of my all-time favourite guitar players, and having the chance to collaborate with him on an instrument was truly a bucket list moment for me. The collaboration is also a perfect fit for Martin Guitar, a company that shares David’s hope for a more sustainable world that we can leave in good conscience for generations to come.”
