The guitar played by Kirk Hammett in Metallica’s music video for One is up for auction. The ESP 400 series S-Type comes signed by Kirk Hammett and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.

The music video for One was Metallica’s first, after three albums with no videos. It incorporated footage from the 1971 film Johnny Got His Gun, and was an MTV staple from its release in 1989 onwards. According to the auction listing the video was played across the day on MTV alongside hits by U2, Debbie Gibson and Bon Jovi. Notably, the story the song and the video tell has much darker themes than the average late-1980s rock ballad. It recounts the tale of a soldier so badly wounded he’s left blind, deaf, mute and paralysed – but fully conscious, and being kept alive by military doctors.

Since its appearance online in 2009, the video has also racked up over 200 million views. The guitar itself is featured throughout the video, and is a traditional S-type, with three single-coils and a natural finish. The auction listing describes it as in “excellent” condition.

Bidding closes five days from now, and at time of writing the current bid is $26,000.
