PRS has launched the Private Stock Paul’s 85, a limited run of electric guitars with specifications chosen personally by Paul Reed Smith.
The guitars came about when a selection of wide-curl maple tops found their way to PRS’ Private Stock Wood Vault. According to the brand, “Paul Reed Smith knew they should be saved for something special. That special something ended up being the Paul’s 85.”
The run of guitars have been crafted by PRS’ Private Stock team, with Paul having picked the tops and other specs, then played each guitar until he was happy with it – and the team executing his tweaks. These extra specs include Peruvian mahogany necks, Honduran rosewood fretboards and headstock veneers, solid red abalone birds with mother of pearl outlines, bone nuts, vintage-style tuning pegs, and aluminium stop tail bridges with brass inserts and brass studs.
The finishing technique used to achieve the ‘Electric Tiger Glow’ colour is PRS’ own stain and spray technique, which results in the accentuated, striped grain of the wide-curl maple. The pickups are PRS’ TCI pickups voiced for a full and clear sound.
Paul Reed Smith said of the special run: “We believe guitar making is an ongoing process of discovery, and this Paul’s 85 guitar utilizes all of the parts, processes, and workmanship I have spent my career (to date) seeking, testing, refining, and teaching our craftsman. My hope is that these benchmark instruments are something remarkable for our company and the industry. There is no better way to close out our 35th Anniversary than with these extraordinary, hopefully magic, guitars.”
These guitars are available exclusively through Authorized PRS Private Stock dealers, and there are only 85 of them worldwide. Find out more at prsguitars.com.
