NAMM 2020: Rainger FX may just have the weirdest – and thirstiest – pedal at NAMM. The Minibar is a “liquid analyser pedal” into which you’re meant to pour any type of liquid in order to change the effect.

The mini distortion pedal is completely silent until liquid is poured into a tiny watertight container that’s mounted on the enclosure. The Minibar then analyses the qualities of the liquid to change the character and EQ of the drive – these include the opacity of the liquid and its conductivity.

Rainger says that water-based liquids produce similar levels of gain, while “a few drops of red wine or coffee [tone] down the high-end and add bass”. The company even tried Jagermeister and Coca-Cola – the former creates a “great dark drive” while the latter a “nice mild overdrive with plenty of lower mids”.

Most liquids, according to the brand, create bandpass tones that are wide open and with plenty of harmonics.
