NAMM 2020 Video: Reverb showcase weird and wonderful 60s guitars
Joe from Reverb sits down with some weird and wonderful guitars from the 60s, including a Maton Fyrbyrd and a Tokai Hummingbird with a German carve.
NAMM 2020: Reverb pulled out all the stops once again at this year’s NAMM Show with another awe-inspiring booth, consisting of a plethora of cool, quirky and desirable instruments from vintage guitars to pedals and even synths.
One of the main attractions was the wall of weird and wonderful 60s guitars, all generously loaned by Wilco‘s Jeff Tweedy aside from the Maton Fyrbyrd which was presented by the Maton Museum.
The Maton Fyrbyrd was originally manufactured in Australia in the 60s, and this particular model is particularly rare due to its Pelham Blue finish. Other guitars on show were the Wendre Polyphon Beta, a made-in-Italy guitar reminiscent of a Salvador Dali painting.
Featuring a single-cutaway design and offset three-pickup system, the guitar also includes three individual switches to turn each pickup on and off alongside headstock windows underneath each tuning key.
Elsewhere we demo the Tokai Hummingbird, an instrument that represents the pre-lawsuit era of Japanese guitar building with aplomb. Featuring a German carve and a two-pickup configuration, with the neck pickup in an offset position, it also includes a three-way toggle alongside roller switches for each pickup and a gnarly tremolo system.
