Softube cranks up the volume with two new Marshall Plexi plugins

Continuing with a long-running series of collaborations, Softube has announced two new Marshall amplifier plugins.

The first is a recreation of the Marshall Plexi Super Lead 1959. This plugin was developed using Marshall’s own 1967 reference unit, a head kept in mint condition in Marshall’s museum. Softube paired this amp with an era-appropriate 1960BHW 4×12 cab, recording the IRs with engineer Tony Platt using a variety of vintage microphones. Platt is the engineer for AC/DC, fittingly enough, as Angus Young used a Super Lead throughout his career in the band. The model has some hefty heritage behind it, having been the go-to amp for Eric Clapton during the Cream years, and used by Jimi Hendrix at his legendary Woodstock performance.

The Softube Marshall Plexi Super Lead 1959 plugin emulates the entire functionality of the original amp head, with both channels available to use independently or combined for a variety of gain and saturation levels.

The second plugin comes from an even louder and more aggressive world of guitar tones. Softube has partnered with Slayer guitarist Kerry King to recreate his signature custom Marshall 2203KK, nicknamed “The Beast.” The plugin recreates the amp’s four KT88 power tube stages, and models every hand-wired component found in the amp. The impulse responses were recorded using King’s own 4×12 cabs – and Softube captured both King’s studio sound and live stage setup. The ‘Studio’ and ‘Custom’ modes were recorded in Henson Recording Studios, LA, with engineer Terry Date, while the ‘Live’ mode was recorded at a 2019 Stockholm stadium show alongside front-of-house engineer Chris Paccou.
