The 2021 edition of the charity luthier competition the Great Guitar Build Off is underway. The competition is split into a number of parts. There’s the open competition, with separate categories for scratch and kit builds, as well as the invitational category, where notable content creators are sent the raw materials for a build.

A number of builders who took part in the invitational category are returning for 2021. Competing in the category this year are Brad at Angove Guitars, Tamar at 3x3Custom, Colin at CSGuitars, Dylan at Dylan talks tone, Johnny at Crafted Workshop, Tim at New Perspectives Music, Tchiks Guitars, Jimmy at JimmyDiresta and Ben at Crimson Guitars.

The instruments built by competitors in this category will be auctioned off for a charity of their choice, as well to help the Great Guitar Build Off provide guitar kits, tools and luthier courses to those who might not have access to them.

Final video submissions from Invitational builders will arrive on 18 June, the same day the charity auction goes live on the Crimson guitars eBay.

Open Competition

This year the open competition is split into both scratch and kit build contests, depending on how pre-fabricated some parts of the guitar are.

The open competition will be judged by a number of guitar content creators: Matt and Chris at Texas Toast, winners of last year’s invitational competition, as well as Derek at BigD Guitars, Mary Spender, Maria at Mango Guitar, Steve at Steve Guitar, Dan at Guns and Guitars, Dagan at PMTVUK, Lee at AndertonsTV, Jamie at Guitarist and Sophie Burrell.

Following on from the success of last time, there are over 400 entrants across the two categories. Winners will be announced on 23 July by Ben Crowe, on the Crimson Guitars YouTube.
