Guitars owned and played by Hendrix and Bob Marley to be auctioned off
Up to a million dollars of guitar could go under the hammer.

The latest guitars to be announced for auction include some played by Jimi Hendrix and Bob Marley.
The Icons & Idols Trilogy: Rock ‘N’ Roll auction hosted by Julien’s Auctions, which will also host the sale of two of Eddie Van Halen’s guitars, is to see two of Jimi Hendrix’s guitars and one owned by Bob Marley added to the catalogue.
The first of Hendrix’s is a left-handed Fender Stratocaster, finished in Olympic White and dating from 1969. It has standard late-’60s Stratocaster specs such as a maple neck (without a skunk stripe) and an alder body. The three pickups in the guitar are original, and the guitar comes with two notarised letters and a photograph to indicate authenticity. It’s expected to fetch between $300,000 and $500,000.
The second of Hendrix’s is an acoustic guitar, made by William C Stahl in the 1960s. It’s constructed with a spruce top, Brazilian rosewood sides and back, a mahogany neck and an ebony fingerboard. The natural finish shows quite a bit of playwear, just below the soundhole.
Certifying its authenticity are a number of documents, including a copy of a letter from Noel Redding stating that the guitar belonged to Hendrix and that he “saw Hendrix carrying this guitar at one occasion when I went to the movies with Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and a female friend.” It’s expected to fetch $200,000-$500,000.
The guitar that belonged to Bob Marley is an Ovation 1612-4 Custom Balladeer acoustic, loaded with a pickup. The guitar was given by Marley to Benji Levy, who Marley met and befriended at a car dealership in Jamaica. According to the auction page, the guitar’s repaired neck is the result of a fight between Marley and his girlfriend Cindy Breakspeare. Breakspeare reportedly hit Marley with the guitar – he then gave it to Levy, who had it repaired. It’s expected to fetch between $80,000 and $100,000
The auction will be taking place between 1-2 December 2020.
