Gearslutz will be changing its name to Gearspace, following an online petition signed by close to 5,000 people.

Gearspace.com – the new domain for the popular pro audio forum – is set to launch in mid-April. See its announcement video below:

The Change.org campaign which instigated the change was launched in January 2021 by a user named Cam Ran, who wrote: “Not every woman is offended by this name, but enough people are that it’s a frequent and recurring topic. Most of the engineers I know feel uncomfortable with the name.”

Jules Standen, founder of Gearspace, issued a statement that same month in which he acknowledged the petition and announced that the forum would be renamed to something “more inclusive”.

“A recent petition for a forum name change has generated impassioned debate,” Standen wrote. “We recognise and agree that the wordplay pun in the name has gotten old and it is now time to move forwards.”

Reacting to the news in a statement shared to Change.org in January, Cam Ran called the forum’s decision “an amazing step for equality in the industry”.

“Thank you Jules and everyone at Gearslutz for hearing us out and taking the right step towards progress,” Cam Ran wrote. “You have gained the support of many in the process.”
