He wasn’t exactly keeping it a secret, but the curtains have officially been pulled off John Mayer’s long-awaited collaboration with PRS Guitars.

It took two and a half years for the bluesman and the guitar brand to design the instrument. The alder-body Silver Sky is inspired by Mayer’s favorite elements from 1963 and 1964 vintage instruments, but comes with modern installments such as PRS locking tuners, a reverse headstock, and a steel PRS tremolo bridge with trem arm.

“It’s been a dream of mine for years to design a guitar that includes some of my favorite vintage specifications but with a modern spirit and aesthetic,” Mayer said. “After two years of study and refinement, the Silver Sky is my vision of what a reboot of the electric guitar should look and feel like.”

The Silver Sky boasts a trio of newly designed 635JM pickups, which are based on vintage specimens and deliver a higher-than-usual signal-to-noise ratio. The tuners, while vintage-styled, have been tweaked with modern components and a locking mechanism. Other specs include a 22-fret maple neck with rosewood fretboard, a 25.5-inch scale length, a 7.25-inch fretboard radius, and Mayer’s signature 635JM neck carve.

“Everything about this guitar has to work,” Paul Reed Smith said. “It has to play in tune, stay in tune, not buzz, sound beautiful, have very good signal-to-noise ratio and feel familiar and comfortable. By paying attention to all the details, we were able to create an instrument that John is very pleased with and that we are very proud of.”

The PRS Silver Sky is available in Tungsten, Frost, Onyx and Horizon; it will ship on March 20. For more information, check out prsguitars.com.
