Watch the 1996 in-store Deftones gig that got shut down for getting “way out of hand”

A member of staff at the store allowed the band to play one more song, if the crowd agreed not to bodysurf or jump at each other.

Footage of Deftones performing an in-store gig at HMV in Philadelphia back in 1996 has been shared online, where the crowd got so “out of hand” that a member of staff was forced to shut it down.

The gig was played following the release of their album Adrenaline on 10 October ‘96, as the band were touring as a support act for KISS. The gig was free to attend, and it seems that the crowd’s moshing and crowd surfing got a little out of control, forcing it to a halt.

Frontman Chino Moreno can be seen asking the crowd frequently throughout the set to respect the store leading up to the gig being momentarily called off. An employee comes to the stage following a performance of Nosebleed and declares, “Guys, you’re getting way out of hand. The show’s over.”

After boos and chants of “fuck you!” from the audience, Moreno takes to the mic: “Hey, we’re very sorry man, it’s not our fault, you know what I’m saying,” he says.

Shortly after, the store employee returns to say the band can perform one more track as long as the crowd calms down.

“Be good to each other, alright? One song, that’s it. You don’t need to be hurting in front of you. Okay? Can I hear it? No body-surfing! No jumping at each other! Don’t fuck this place up,” he says.

The band then played 7 Words to conclude their set.
