Death Cab For Cutie’s Ben Gibbard has paid tribute to Fountains of Wayne’s Adam Schlesinger on his recent weekly livestream today. Schlesinger passed away on 2 April at the age of 52 due to complications related to COVID-19.
Before Gibbard covered Barbara H, taken from Fountains of Wayne’s 1996 debut, but before he did he spoke about the connection between him and Schlesinger, despite the two not meeting: “I owe him a huge debt of gratitude,” he said, “because he was integral in picking ‘Me & Magdalena’ for the Monkees to record four years ago.”
“I always thought, as one always does in life, that you’ll have plenty of time to say ‘thank you’ or ‘I love you’ or give somebody a compliment or what have you, but that day obviously did not come. But to the bottom of my heart, I’m so grateful for him to help me realise a lifelong dream.”
Take a look at the cover in the below stream, with Barbara H starting at 42:48.
Gibbard’s ‘Live From Home’ stream series recently changed from a daily to a weekly broadcast, filmed from his home studio. On his final daily show, he covered R.E.M, The Cure and Morrissey.
