Guitarist Bill Frisell has released a new single, Keep Your Eyes Open, along with an accompanying music video. Take a look below.

The piece originally appeared on his 1997 album Nashville, with this new version being from his upcoming album Valentine. Valentine is centred around Frisell’s trio of himself, bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Rudy Royston, as he explained in a statement about the release: “This album is all about Rudy and Thomas and the musical relationship I have with them. We’ve played a lot for a number of years, but there was no evidence of it, so I really wanted to have a document of it, if only to show that it’s real and not this magical thing that I’ve imagined in my fantasies.” The album will be his first record with the trio.

The previous single from the album, its closer We Shall Overcome, arrived earlier this year, will Frisell saying that “I’ve been playing the song for years, and I’m going to keep playing it ’til there is no need anymore. I can’t help but hope that day will come.”

When we spoke to Frisell last year, he told us of his continued drive to keep learning: “Any time I can get out of my comfort zone, it’s a good thing. It pushes you into some place you’ve never been. Whether it’s the same song, or with the same people, I think that’s the most exciting thing for a musician and the audience, too. If everyone is experiencing that, it’s an amazing thing.”

Valentine arrives on 14 August, and can be preordered here.
