Black Sabbath’s founding bassist, Geezer Butler, is releasing his memoir about his experiences being in the band, as well as an insight into his personal life.

The memoir, titled “Into the Void: From Birth to Black Sabbath – and Beyond”, follows his upbringing in Birmingham as well as the band’s beginnings as a “scrappy blues quartet”. Butler also delves into the internal struggles that led to the band’s many lineup changes over the years.

According to the publisher Harper Collins’ description, the book is “A rollicking, effusive, and candid memoir by the heavy metal musician and founding member of Black Sabbath, covering his years as the band’s bassist and main lyricist through his later-career projects, and detailing how one of rock’s most influential bands formed and prevailed.”

“Like Geezer’s bass lines and the story of Black Sabbath themselves, Into the Void is original, dramatic and one hell of a ride,” the publisher continues.

Butler is the third Black Sabbath member to release a memoir, following Ozzy Osbourne’s I Am Ozzy, and Tony Iommi’s Iron Man: My Journey through Heaven and Hell with Black Sabbath.

The news of the bassist’s memoir broke via twitter almost a year ago, later telling music journalist Eddie Trunk in an interview in May, that the manuscript had been submitted and was in the editing process.

However, he first announced he was working on a book in 2021 in an interview with Cleveland.com, telling them that “when my parents died, I always wished I’d asked them a lot more things than I knew about… So, I started writing a memoir for my grandkids to read, and that’s been fun going through stuff – old times and growing up in Birmingham and all that.”

Into the Void: From Birth to Black Sabbath – and Beyond is available to preorder from 10 March 2023, but will be on sale from 8 June for £25.
