Bruce Springsteen has released his latest Sirius XM radio show, and in its opening delivered a frank and, in his own words, “pissed-off” address to US president Donald Trump.

In a new episode of From My Home To Yours broadcast on the internet via E Street Radio and The Sirius XM app, the musician delivered the following opening statement.

“Welcome my fellow travellers. This is Bruce Springsteen coming from my home to yours, with music for troubled times, volume 6, titled: Down To The River To Pray. May you lay your personal burdens down for a moment and join us in the next hour for some music that I hope will lighten those burdens as well as administer ever so slightly to your good soul.

“I had another show prepared for broadcast this week on this strange and eventful summer but with a hundred thousand plus Americans dead over the last few months, and the empty, shamed response from our leaders, I’ve been simply pissed off. Those lives deserved better than just being inconvenient statistics for our president’s reelection campaign.

“So instead of celebrating the joys of summer today, we will be contemplating on our current circumstances with the coronavirus and the cost it has drawn from our nation. We will be calculating what we’ve lost, sending prayers for the deceased and for the families they have left behind. So if you’re ready for a rock n’ roll requiem, stay tuned.

“I’m going to start out by sending one to the man sitting behind the resolute desk. With all respect, sir, show some consideration and care for your countrymen and your country. Put on a fucking mask.”

He then introduces the Bob Dylan track, Disease Of Conceit. It’s of course not the first time he has made his political views clear, however, this recent example comes from a notably more exasperated Springsteen. Various aspects of Trump’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic have been criticised by musicians and non-musicians alike, such as the abrupt halting funding to the World Health Organisation, the USA’s search for a vaccine being separate from the global effort and, as has drawn Springsteen’s ire, his aversion to wearing a mask in public.
