Corey Steger, former guitarist for Underoath, dies at 42

Steger was involved in a fatal car accident.

Corey Steger, the guitarist best known for his tenure in Tampa-based metalcore band Underoath, has died at the age of 42.

His death was confirmed by the band’s ex-vocalist and co-founder Dallas Taylor, who said Steger died in a car accident last Wednesday (17 March).

“I don’t know how to type this. I’m without words,” Taylor wrote in an Instagram post, dated 18 March. “Yesterday at around 6:00 p.m. Corey Steger, one of the original founding members of @underoathband was rear-ended in a car wreck, and went home to be with the Lord.”

In the wake of Steger’s death, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to benefit the late guitarist’s widow and children. The campaign aims to reach a goal of $500,000 and has, at press time, raised $14,365 from 137 donors.

Steger joined Underoath in 1998, just a year after the band’s formation. He recorded on their first two albums, 1999’s Act Of Depression and 2000’s Cries Of The Past.

After his departure from Underoath in 2001, Steger joined Californian thrash metal band Hand Of Fire in 2010. He left the band in 2015 before they signed to Rottweiler Records in 2015.
