Producer Dave Cobb has spoken about the loss of the legendary singer-songwriter John Prine, who died in April 2020, and revealed that before he died Prine had planned to record a new studio album with Cobb in July of 2020.

Cobb, who recorded Prine’s final studio album The Tree of Forgiveness as well as the posthumously-released single I Remember Everything, told Forbes about his friendship with Prine, and how his death came while he was preparing another album. “He was such a friend,” Cobb said, “not only a friend, but he was Yoda. He had this really beautiful way of speaking and making everything make sense. He was absolute family.”

Cobb also described his final session with Prine: “recording I Remember Everything was a beautiful moment. He had knee surgery and we just went to his house to do it there. He was really proud and happy in life.

“I did not think leaving that night that it would be the last thing we’d ever done, because we were booked to make a record in July. And he had been writing songs, he was super inspired, It’s heartbreaking that we didn’t get to make that album, because John wasn’t finished. He was full of life.”

Prine’s death led to a number of tributes from across the world of music, with everyone from Phoebe Bridgers, Roger Waters and Bonnie Raitt speaking about his influence or covering one of his songs. He died from complications due to COVID-19 at the age of 73.
