Dave Grohl has revealed that Axl Rose purchased him the “nicest fucking guitar” after he leant the Guns N’ Roses singer the illuminated throne adorned with guitar necks that he used on stage following a broken leg.

Grohl acquired the throne after breaking his leg falling off the stage in 2015 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Despite “light-up thrones designed for rockstars with injured legs” not being in huge demand, the throne got a second lease of life when Axl Rose injured his foot in Los Angeles.

Grohl told Classic Rock: “Axl took it out with Guns N’ Roses, then he took it out with AC/DC, and then all of a sudden I became the guy you come to if you break a limb on tour, like ‘Thrones R Us’.”

The loan was followed up with a generous gift from Rose to Grohl (with a little help from the six-string knowledge of Slash), as he explains: “He had Slash go pick me a guitar. And he picked me an early-’60s Gibson ES-335 Dot, which to this day is the nicest fucking guitar I have ever played in my life.

“It was an incredibly kind and classy gesture, and I was very appreciative.”

Grohl is quite the fan of 335-style guitars – since 2007 his signature guitar with Gibson has been a unique take on the ES-335.

Foo Fighters are gearing up for the release of their latest record Medicine At Midnight, which arrives 5 February. While fully touring the album is off the table thanks to the pandemic, the band will appear on a special episode of Austin City Limits, recounting their past appearances on the live music showcase.
