Dave Grohl says he still has dreams where Nirvana never ended

Dave Grohl has said that he still has dreams in which his former band Nirvana are still together.

The Foo Fighters frontman was Nirvana’s fifth and best-known drummer. He played with the seminal grunge trio until frontman Kurt Cobain’s death in 1994. Speaking to Classic Rock in a new interview, Grohl discussed performing Nirvana’s music live – which he says he’ll only do as a drummer, alongside former bandmates Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear – as well as how he still dreams about the band.

“I wouldn’t feel comfortable singing a song that Kurt sang,” he said. “I feel perfectly at home playing those songs on the drums. And I love playing them with Krist and Pat and another vocalist.”

“I still have dreams that we’re in Nirvana, that we’re still a band,” he added. “I still dream there’s an empty arena waiting for us to play,” he continued.

“But I don’t sit down at home and run through Smells Like Teen Spirit by myself. It’s just a reminder that the person who is responsible for those beautiful songs is no longer with us. It’s bittersweet.”

Grohl, Novoselic and Smear last reconvened to play Nirvana songs on 4 January 2020, at a benefit concert for the non-profit arts organisation, Art Of Elysium. They were joined by St. Vincent, Beck and Grohl’s daughter Violet, who was on vocal duties.

Last week (6 January), several never-before-seen photos of Nirvana surfaced online. The snaps were shot by photographer Richard Davis at the band’s second-ever show in the UK on 24 October 1989.
