Dave Mustaine has responded to a compliment from Slayer guitarist Kerry King, who had praised Mustaine’s guitar work during his time in Metallica.

In an interview with Metal Hammer earlier this month (January), King had said of Mustaine that, “Still to this day, he’s a fucking great guitar player” and praised his early work in Metallica alongside James Hetfield.

He said of the band’s early days, “They were great at that point. They were ahead of us by at least 16 months to a year. They were doing originals and we were still doing covers. I think we opened for Metallica with Mustaine, I can’t recall, but I know me and Dave [Lombardo, Slayer drummer] definitely saw them in a club and we were blown away by Mustaine.”

Mustaine has since taken to Twitter to thank King for his complimentary words, writing: “It’s not every day one of the most fearsome guitarists in the world gives you a compliment like this. Thank you Kerry, I look forward to hearing your new stuff and we should definitely go out together.”

The two metal heads haven’t always been this complimentary of each other, just as this 2005 article from Blabbermouth shows, King and Mustaine had previously been in an ongoing feud since their Clash Of The Titans tour in 1991. Mustaine had more recently (in August last year) said he wished The Big Four could work together more.
