They’re yet to decide if it’ll be recorded before touring can happen again, however.

Fontaines D.C. guitarist Carlos O’Connell has revealed that the group are well on their way with writing for their new project, the follow up to this year’s A Hero’s Death.

Speaking to Binaural, O’Connell explained how, like many projects this year, the writing was born of lockdown (translation via NME): “We went to a small house that a friend of ours had. The plan was: ‘Damn, what’s going on? Let’s be there for a couple of weeks,’” he recalled. “And then obviously it was a lot longer than we all thought. We ended up there for two months.”

O’Connell said that he and bass player Conor Deegan III, ended up producing “a lot of demos” during quarantine. The other members of the band, who were locked down separately, had also been writing, so when the band reconvened in London in the summer “we started to share everything we had,” O’Connell explained.

Asked if any of the demos had been worked into final songs, O’Connell said that the band instead have “a lot” of demo songs in the pipeline and that Fontaines are now deciding whether to record a new album sooner, or tour with just A Hero’s Death once touring is viable again.

“We must have about 11 songs recorded,” he said. “We have a list [of] like 35. It’s going much more in the direction of the drum and bass that you hear a little bit on ‘Televised Mind’ and ‘A Lucid Dream’. What Tom [Coll] is playing on drums is incredible.”

A Hero’s Death was released on 31 July 2020, and recently received a Grammy nomination for best rock album.
