Former Morbid Angel guitarist Richard Brunelle has died. He was 55.

The news was confirmed by Brunelle’s family and former bandmates. Morbid Angel’s former drummer and vocalist Mike Browning wrote in a Facebook post “I am beyond devastated and shocked about Richard Brunelle passing away on Monday. As of right now I only know that it happened on Monday and I had talked to him just this month.”

Blabbermouth also reports that Brunelle’s sister-in-law confirmed the news in a Facebook post, writing “This devastating post is at the request of my husband and his mother. It is with deep regret and sorrow that we inform Richie’s friends and fans that he passed away [on Monday]. Please feel free to visit the link to share memories and condolences. Rest in peace, Richie. You were so loved and will be forever missed.”

Brunelle was a member of Morbid angel from 1985 until 1992, playing on the two classics Altars of Madness and Blessed are the Sick. After leaving morbid angel, Brunelle went on to play in Paths of Possession, and just last year he launched a new project, The Mosaic Covenant, with drummer Brandon Thomas Lyons.
