Gang Of Four tribute LP for Andy Gill features guests Tom Morello, Serj Tankien and more

Gang Of Four have announced a tribute album to late guitarist Andy Gill. The Problem of Leisure: A Celebration Of Andy Gill And Gang Of Four arrives in May 2021 and features covers of the band’s music performed by a host of Gill’s favourite musicians.

Gill had originally planned the album as a celebration of the band’s 40th anniversary. In light of the 64-year-old guitarist’s passing in February this year, the album will instead commemorate Gill’s legacy.

Outside of his work with Gang Of Four, Gill was also a revered record producer whose credits span Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Jesus Lizard and many others.

The full list of guests to appear on The Problem Of Leisure… has yet to be revealed. However, Tom Morello and System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankien will perform the album’s lead single, Natural’s Not In It, due out 1 January.

Morello, speaking in a statement, commented on the lasting impression Gill has had on him and the guitar world at large.

“Andy Gill was one of a handful of artists in history who changed the way guitars are played,” He said. “His jagged plague-disco raptor-attack industrial-funk deconstructed guitar anti-hero sonics and fierce poetic radical intellect were hugely influential to me.”

The album’s cover was created by acclaimed visual artist Damien Hirst, a longtime fan of the band. The art piece “Dog With Bone” was personally selected by Gill out of a “series of giant pipe cleaner animals based on little ones [designed] by kids.”

“I think he wanted this work for the cover because it’s new and unexpected and in your face and hard not to like, they make adults feel like children and Andy always wanted to celebrate that.”

Catherine Mayer, Gill’s widow, shared an introduction for the album yesterday (2 December).
