Gibson has unveiled a recreation of Greeny, a 1959 Les Paul currently owned by Kirk Hammett. The guitar has a storied history, having been owned not only by the Metallica guitarist but also by both Peter Green and Gary Moore.
Writing on Instagram about the guitar, Hammett said: “Special thanks to Cesar and Mark at Gibson for making me a Greenie twin! Can you tell who is who?”
Hammett purchased the guitar in 2014, and it’s since seen a lot of use on stage with Metallica – most often in Fade To Black.
Speculation about a replica was started when Mark Agnesi, Gibson’s director of Brand Experience, posted a guitar that looked incredibly similar to Greeny, with a couple of differences. What’s still not known is if a larger run of Greeny replicas will hit shelves any time soon.
The news follows the reveal of the first products of the Murphy Lab – a special division of the Gibson Custom Shop dedicated to accurate ageing of guitars.
