Jason Becker, the guitar virtuoso who has battled ALS over the last three decades, is reportedly currently experiencing “pretty scary” health struggles.

Yesterday (6 April), Becker’s mother, Patricia, issued a statement via Twitter to update fans on her son’s condition.

“Jason has requested prayers from all you wonderful folks out there. He can feel your prayers, and is experiencing shortness of breath and a rapid heart rate which is pretty scary stuff,” she wrote.

Patricia also assured fans: “We are in constant contact with his doctors and will keep you posted. Thank you all.”

Becker was diagnosed with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) in the early 90s at the age of 22, when he was at the height of his music career. The neuromuscular disease robbed him of his ability to play the guitar, walk and even speak. He has since relied on his parents’ support to survive.

A massive streaming event to raise money for Becker’s medical bills is happening every weekday in April and May 2021. Hosted by DragonForce guitarist Herman Li, it features a star-studded ensemble of guests from Steve Vai and Marty Friedman to Mark Tremonti and Tosin Abasi.

Patricia also shared that while her son hasn’t been able to communicate his gratitude for the donations raised so far, he’s thankful for them.

“He is so grateful to you all and hopes to get back to a level of energy that makes it possible to let you all know, personally, how much he appreciates you,” she wrote.
