You can now bid on six strands of Kurt Cobain’s hair at auction
The opening bid is set at $2,500 – or $416 a strand.

Six strands of Kurt Cobain’s hair have gone under the hammer at an event by Iconic Auctions.
Bidding on the unique listing opened yesterday (6 May) and will close on 15 May. Iconic Auctions is looking for an opening bid of $2,500, which at press time, hasn’t happened yet.
The hairs will come with several documents – including a two-page affidavit and photos – to support their authenticity.
Cobain’s hairs were kept by Tessa Osbourne, a friend who gave him a haircut in 1989 while Nirvana were on tour to promote Bleach. After Cobain’s death, Osbourne gifted the strands to Seattle artist Nicole DePolo, who penned the affidavit included in the sale.
“Tessa had known Kurt back in England, and they had hung out during the Bleach tour,” DePolo wrote [per Iconic Auctions]. “When it came to Kurt, Tessa was kind of [like what] Astrid Kirchherr had been to the Beatles – the woman who had given [Kurt] his iconic haircut.”
The proceeds from the sale will be directed towards Live Nation’s Crew Nation relief fund.
The past few years have seen a wealth of Cobain-connected items hit the auction block, including signed cassette tapes, worn cardigans, and even his signature left-handed Fender Mustang.
Last month, it was announced that the images from Kurt Cobain’s final formal photoshoot would be sold as an NFT. The images – which hold a current bid of roughly $171,400 at press time – closes later today (7 May).
