Brant Bjork discusses the likelihood of a Kyuss reunion

Former Kyuss drummer Brant Bjork has revealed that he has made moves to reopen communication between him and guitarist Josh Homme. However, he’s noted that “we’ll just have to see” with regards to a full reunion. After the band’s breakup in 1995, the members have since been involved in legal battles with each other.

Speaking in a new interview with TotalRock’s Hobo On The Radio show, Bjork noted that Homme spoke last summer about a potential reunion, in order to have the “last chapter” of Kyuss be a positive one.

In 2011, Bjork, original Kyuss frontman John Garcia and guitarist Nick Oliveri formed Kyuss Lives!, and began to play concerts under that name. Homme and bassist Scott Reeder would successfully sue Garcia and Bjork the next year, when they planned to trademark “Kyuss.” and release music under the name Kyuss Lives!.

Bjork agreed with Homme’s sentiment to see Kyuss end on a positive note, saying: “It’s an interesting comment. I can totally relate to his feeling, because I was really bummed by the way that Kyuss broke up in ‘95 – I didn’t want it to end that way.

“Had we known how to keep a band together, we could have just had that band moving all along and taking breaks from time to time to pursue other things. But, yeah, it has this kind of stop and rebirth and reinvention… I share his frustration. But there’s always a way to do it, and it just takes communication.”

He described how Oliveri was the one to bring Homme’s comment to his attention: “I thought it was really fitting that it was Nick who actually called me and said, ‘Hey, you should check this out.’ … to be honest, it was really kind of relieving to hear him speak the way he was.” Homme’s perspective on the history of Kyuss then inspired Bjork to get in touch: “ And I reached out to him. And he actually was like: ‘Yeah, let’s talk. And I’ll get back to you.’ And I was like, ‘All right. Cool, man.’ And then it never happened. So I don’t know what to say about that.”

“That was my attempt at not necessarily getting the band back together but at the very least developing some communication with Josh,” Bjork said in reference to a possible full reunion. “But it didn’t happen. That was months and months and months ago, so it’s clear that it’s not gonna move forward. And who knows? Maybe he puts Kyuss together and puts his own version together or whatever. I don’t know what he’s gonna do. We’ll have to just see.”

Kyuss disbanded in 1995, three months after the release of their album ...And The Circus Leaves Town. Bjork had left in 1994, being replaced by Alfredo Hernández.
