London guitarist Lianne La Havas recently put on a cosy Christmas performance, playing her velvety, bittersweet track Courage.

Armed simply with her Harmony Juno and her powerful, alluring vocals, the 31-year-old played the song – which appears on her 2020 eponymous album – to a virtual audience.

Courage is the 10th track on La Havas’ self-titled album, released on 17 July earlier this year. The record, her third LP, was self-recorded and put together alongside her frequent, and most trusted, collaborators such as Matt Hales, Beni Giles, Sam Crowe and Mura Masa.

Speaking to Guitar.com in an interview about creating the album, La Havas said the only opinions she would take were “of the people I trusted the most”.

She added about her collaborators: “It was wonderful to have them understand what I was trying to achieve, and then to see it come to life with everybody feeling as invested as I did. There are lots of decisions when you do it yourself. It’s a big upheaval – it took over my life for the past three or four years. But that’s what I do.”

In a review of the albumGuitar.com’s Gary Walker described Lianne La Havas as “a strong return to form that pulls no punches in its candid portrayal of a crumbling relationship”.
