The post-Super Bowl edition of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will play host to musical guests Metallica. The broadcast will take part at 11:35 PM this Sunday (7 February), and will follow the halftime show performance from The Weeknd.

The setlist of the appearance is yet to be announced, but it could be the first time Metallica play songs from their in-progress album, which the band has been working on across lockdown. Late last year, Ulrich told Classic Rock that the album is the “the heaviest thing” the band has made.

Elsewhere across the Super Bowl weekend, Green Day will perform on Saturday night (6 February) as part of the 10th annual NFL Honors show.

Despite several petitions launched to make it happen, Metallica have yet to play the Super Bowl halftime show. In 2016, fans suspected they might play the halftime show when San Francisco hosted the event, but organisers chose Coldplay instead. Metallica instead played a separate concert across the weekend, at San Francisco’s AT&T Park.

Alongside the work on their upcoming record, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo is set to appear on Ozzy Osbourne’s follow-up to Ordinary Man, alongside members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Foo Fighters.
