Molly Miller on inclusivity in the guitar community today: “I never used to see females being represented”

Molly Miller has offered her thoughts on inclusivity in contemporary guitar culture, welcoming the increased representation of female players in the industry and community.
Miller shared her opinions in the cover feature for Guitar Magazine’s May 2021 issue. As part of the feature, we spoke to a panel of modern-day guitar stars to find out their thoughts on topics ranging from gear to social media to sustainability.
“There has been a lot of growth with diversity and inclusion,” Miller said. “I never used to see females being represented in the guitar community and I am seeing a lot more of that online.”
Miller suggested representation plays an important role for early learners, saying the lack of it “can discourage younger students to pick up the instrument”.
“If they don’t see anyone that looks like them doing the thing, then they won’t think they would be included,” she explained. “I do believe that the newer trend of having all types of people representing guitar companies will encourage everyone to play guitar.”
Miller’s comments on inclusivity and representation echoed those made by Covet guitarist Yvette Young, who also spoke as part of the panel.
“I think actually more people are inspired to pick it up thanks to how guitar music is progressing and more diverse representation,” Young told Guitar Magazine.
She added: “It’s becoming more diverse and people are becoming more open-minded to the different applications of guitar. We are becoming more focused on textures and musicality rather than virtuosity.”
