Neil Young has announced the release of Johnny’s Island, a ‘lost’ album he had recorded back in the 1980s.

This record is the latest announced under the folk icon’s long-term Archives project, under which he also released Homegrown – another ‘lost’ album from the 70s – last year.

Johnny’s Island was recorded in 1982 at Commercial Recorders studio in Honolulu. The album was made with the same crew that worked on Young’s 12th studio album Trans, released in December 1982.

In a post on his Archives site, Young gave a brief description of what fans can expect on the upcoming release.

Johnny’s Island […] includes a majority of unreleased tracks including Big Pearl, Island In The Sun and Love Hotel, plus others you may have heard before,” he wrote. “It’s a beautiful record coming to you soon.”

In a 1995 interview with Mojo (via HyperRust) Young spoke briefly about Johnny’s Island, then called Island In The Sun, saying: “It was a tropical thing all about sailing, ancient civilisations, islands and water.” he also added that Geffen refused the record and that “two or three songs ended up on Trans.”

In January 2020, Young entered a deal with Hipgnosis Songs Fund to sell half of his 1,180 song catalogue. Though exact details of the deal have not been revealed, the BBC has written that the deal was valued at an estimated $150 million.
