Paul McCartney teases upcoming documentary with Rick Rubin

Paul McCartney and producer Rick Rubin have teased a brand new retrospective “documentary event”, exploring the music and history of The Beatles.

Macca has released a black-and-white trailer for the project, which depicts Rubin and himself hanging out in the studio, listening to classic hits – like Come Together – as well as chatting about the Fab Four’s legacy.

“We realised we were writing songs that were memorable, not because we wanted them to be memorable, but because we had to remember them,” McCartney tells Rubin in the clip.

Per Deadline, the series will consist of six parts and will be co-produced by Frank Marshall, who has recently worked on HBO’s The Bee Gees: How Can You Mend a Broken Heart. A description for the project on McCartney’s official YouTube channel reads: “Paul McCartney x Rick Rubin – A forthcoming documentary event. Coming Soon.” No release date has been confirmed as of yet.

McCartney will release his latest album McCartney III this Friday (18 December) – a long overdue followup to 1970’s McCartney II. On the upcoming record, Macca wrote and recorded every song solo, and even played all the different instruments. “Each day I’d start recording with the instrument I wrote the song on and then gradually layer it all up; it was a lot of fun,” he said in a statement about the album.

“It was about making music for yourself rather than making music that has to do a job. So, I just did stuff I fancied doing. I had no idea this would end up as an album.”

McCartney is also set to appear on Ringo Starr’s upcoming EP Zoom In, due 19 March 2021.
