Phoebe Bridgers set the internet alight when she smashed her electric guitar during the most recent edition of Saturday Night Live (6 February). The 26-year-old musician has since has commented on the act, revealing she even got Danelectro’s blessing beforehand.

At the end of her performance of I Know The End, Bridgers took her Dano 56 by the neck and proceeded to bludgeon a floor monitor with the baritone guitar as sparks flew onstage.

Though she didn’t quite succeed in breaking the instrument, a number of Twitter users weighed in on the act, with many criticising Bridgers for appealing to shock value.

“Sorry to put the show on blast like this, but I watch @nbcsnl to laugh, not to be scared out of my mind. You just lost a viewer,” wrote one user.

Another remarked, “Why did this woman, Phoebe Bridgers, destroy her guitar on SNL? I mean, I didn’t care much for the song either, but that seemed extra.”

Bridgers has shrugged off the criticism, even retweeting a number of humorous fan responses to the negative comments herself.

Many have also supported Bridgers for channelling her inner Kurt Cobain on live television, including singer-songwriter Jason Isbell who tweeted, “That was like an 85 dollar guitar she smashed come on guys.”

Bridgers, in her reply to Isbell, shared that she pre-planned the act and that Danelectro even gave her their blessing.

“I told Danelectro I was going to do it and they wished me luck and told me they’re hard to break,” she tweeted.
