Placebo have returned and shared their first new single in five years, Beautiful James – take a listen below.

The band released the single with an accompanying visualiser yesterday (16 September). Frontman Brian Molko commented on the song in a statement, saying, “If the song serves to irritate the squares and the uptight, so gleefully be it.

“But it remains imperative for me that each listener discovers their own personal story within it – I really don’t want to tell you how to feel.”

Placebo’s last release was the 2016 EP Life’s What You Make It. Meanwhile, the band’s last studio album Loud Like Love came out in 2013 and they’ve since teased that a follow-up was close to completion.

According to NME, the band said that their eighth studio album was “being primed for release” in a now-deleted Instagram post from May 2021.

The band also asked fans about the types of merchandise they would like to see, writing then: “NFT’s, posters & art prints, masks, cassette tapes, retro tees, a brand new fan club, even a fanzine, maybe dolls…. what placebostuff would you really like to get your hands on?”

Placebo’s next show is planned for May 2022 at the Bearded Theory’s Spring Gathering at Derbyshire’s Catton Hall.
