Real Estate launch Quarantour, an augmented reality concert experience

Real Estate have launched Quarantour, an augmented reality mobile app the band says “brings fans as close to a live concert as possible without having to leave home”.

Quarantour uses a mobile device’s camera to transform “the self-isolated space of one’s choosing into a three-dimensional rock venue to explore and enjoy”, according to a statement. The performance is “complete with the band’s five-piece stage setup backed by full light and sound rigs, between-song banter, even (spoiler alert) an encore”.

Due to COVID-19, Real Estate have rescheduled plans to tour their latest album, The Main Thing, which released in February. The tour was set to kick off in Omaha, Nebraska on 13 April and end in Portland, Oregon on 22 May.

This postponement led to the band developing Quarantour with creative agency CALLEN, whose founder and CCO Craig Allen explained: “Collectively we wondered if there was a way to bring a live experience to fans when no one can leave their home. Instead of having a set time when everyone must join a live stream, what if we could make this an on-demand experience people could use whenever/wherever the feeling strikes? That’s what augmented reality affords us.”

Quarantour is the latest example of how artists have been using technology to deliver music to fans amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Many have been live streaming, and some musicians are even offering lessons online to stay connected with fans.
