Watch: The Band’s Robbie Robertson discusses how his Martin D-28 inspired The Weight

In a clip shared from upcoming documentary Once We Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band, Robertson revealed that it was his Martin D-28 acoustic guitar that got the ball rolling for the writing of The Band classic The Weight.

As Robertson explains in the above clip, “I’m sitting there with a guitar, noodling around. I look in the guitar and, inside, on Martin Guitars, it talks about where they’re made – in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. I pulled into Nazareth… and it just- it was all coming to me.”

Once We Were Brothers: Robbie Robertson and the Band opens in select Cinemas 21 February and traces their history all the way until their final show. Watch a trailer for the film below:
