Drone metal legends Sunn O))) have released three full-length demos from the rehearsal sessions of their record, Life Metal. The demos are available for today (1 May) only, as part of the NTS Radio charity fundraiser Remote Utopias.
This also includes a broadcast Sunn O)))’s concert from Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn, New York in full, including the encore Pyroclasts featuring David Pajo. There will also be a guided meditation broadcast right before this set. Sunn O))) will close the 24-hour takeover on Sunday.
All proceeds from the Bandcamp sales shall be going to the Global Food Banking Network, supporting food banks affected by COVID-19 crisis. NTS is fundraising for the same cause, encouraging listeners to donate to the Global Food Banking Network as they tune in.
In a statement about the release, the band described the recording as “raw, primordial, translucent, amusing, rough, heavy-as-fuck and paralyzing,” consisting of riff and production ideas from Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson in the run-up to Life Metal. Read our interview with Sunn O))) here, where they talk working with Steve Albini, dive into the details of their rigs and the challenges of working with all-tape production.
Purchase the demos over at sunn.bandcamp.com.
