Tame Impala frontman Kevin Parker has shared a new remix of the band’s latest LP, The Slow Rush, entitled The Slow Rush In An Imaginary Place.

The remix adds a new ambient spin to the psychedelic rock record, with added room reverberation and the noise of people talking and milling about. It all adds up to evoke a slowly emptying house party as it nears 4 AM. The project has been shared in a bid to just that, at a time when social gatherings have faded into distant memory – as Parker explains in a post on Instagram: “I made something for all you isolators out there. I call it The Slow Rush In An Imaginary Place. Headphones required for full immersive effect.”

Listen to the remix below, and, as Parker notes, the full effect of the ambient audio is best achieved on headphones.

While it’s a novel approach to bringing a musical experience to fans in these strange times (many artists are instead hosting live streams or giving online lessons), the format itself isn’t necessarily new. There has been a trend for various mood-setting remixes that remove an album from its abstract musical context and place it into something a bit more specific. Parker’s music has received this treatment before, with The Less I Know the Better by Tame Impala as heard in the bathroom of a party. Another notable example would be Toto’s Africa playing in an empty shopping centre – arguably the viral hit that started the trend.
